Lyrics: Why Can't I Be Dave? (Free Earplugs) |

| Back |
Well here it comes, that sinking feeling again
Winding me up inside every time we play Hey I know, Van Halen were so good But nowadays it's not the same I'm not tall enough I'm not good enough Can't get my legs behind my head
I've not got what it takes Oh tell me why can't I be Dave? Can't reach the notes! Oh tell me why can't I be Dave?
I tell myself I've got to learn to sing And it would help if I could play guitar I've got no style, my ego's far too small Hey I might as well be Johnny Marr We like synths too much We're so out of touch And no-one likes us any more
I've not got what it takes Oh tell me why can't I be Dave? Can't play the part! Oh tell me why can't I be Dave?
(Instrumental seemingly comprising a bit from the original song, and a section of "Eat It" by Michael Jackson)
I ain't got no talent...
I've not got what it takes Oh tell me why can't I be Dave? Can't play the part! Oh tell me why can't I be Dave? (etc ...)

latebarfansite says: "Why Can't I Be Dave?" is based on "Why Can't This Be Love?" by Van Halen, the first single released by the band following the departure of colourful frontman Dave Lee Roth in 1985. His replacement, the rather less colourful Sammy Hagar, was not popular with many die-hard fans, and was generally viewed with disappointment - had there been such things as internet message boards back then, they would have echoed with the wailings of disillusoned VanHalenites. Already troubled by guitar hero Eddie Van Halen's new-found preoccupation with playing keyboards, this was seen as terminal evidence of the band's transition from "good" to "bad".
